LSI 21320 Ultra320 SCSI host adapter

Mark: Bad

I recently purchased an LSI 21320 host bus adapter (scsi u320). The previous HBA was an LSI 21040 (scsi u160) using the sym_hi.add driver.

I changed the driver to lsimpt.add (v.1.01.00), swapped the hardware, and restarted. It all seemed fine at first.

Whenever there was a lot of directory + file operations and reads and writes, like zipping a large folder, the operation would simply freeze. It would not necessarily happen the first time, but always by the third time the zip was done. When rebooting (which once required a power off), the drive (JFS) where the problem occurred required an extended chkdsk.

Nothing like this had ever happened before with other HBAs or drivers (Buslogic/Flashpoint, Tekram). Nor has there been any problem with the lsiu160 and sym_hi.add before or since (I reverted to the previous hardware).

  • JFS - IBM:14.100e#@ IBM OS2 JFS retail bld.
