IPv4 addresses: Less than 10pc still available

The shortage of IPv4 addresses has reached a critical stage, according to the registries that allocate internet numbers around the world.

The Number Resource Organization (NRO), which represents the registries, said on Tuesday that less than 10 percent of all IPv4 addresses remain available, threatening the future network operations of all businesses and organisations unless ISPs and businesses step up their migration to IPv6.

"The limited IPv4 addresses will not allow us enough resources to achieve the ambitions we all hold for global internet access," NRO chairman Axel Pawlik said in a statement on Tuesday. "The deployment of IPv6 is a key infrastructure development that will enable the network to support the billions of people and devices that will connect in the coming years."

However, where previous estimates had IPv4 addresses running out in 2011, it now appears addresses are more likely to be depleted in 2012, Pawlik told ZDNet UK. "That is based on the current growth rate, but there might be big allocation requests coming up - you never know," he said.

There are two versions of the internet protocol (IP), which lets devices talk to each other over networks. Most addresses are based on IPv4, but the newer IPv6 - set live in early 2008 - provides trillions more addresses, which will be needed as the numbers of web users and connected devices multiply. Company boards must stop dawdling over IPv6: Those working in IT may know the importance of IPv6, but that awareness must spread beyond the tech community, says Axel Pawlik

IPv4 and IPv6 addresses are not compatible. Pawlik said it was technically feasible to make the two types of IP address talk to each other, but it would be best for companies and ISPs to switch to IPv6 as soon as possible, to keep networks stable and avoid complexity when IPv4 addresses run out.

Pawlik said ISPs and businesses have been putting off the switch to IPv6 because the engineering time and costs involved in such a transition meant "there was no real strong business case".

"There are funny characters in there [rather than just numbers] and IPv6 addresses are longer, but engineers are going to have to get over that," Pawlik said. "It is really about securing the future."

Pawlik also conceded that many businesses are putting off the switch to IPv6 because, even when all public IPv4 addresses have been allocated, they will continue to be able to allocate private IPv4 addresses internally. However, he stressed that anyone running public-facing websites will have to make their sites visible as IPv6 addresses, as their users will be on IPv6 addresses in the future.

Google started making its sites available as IPv6 addresses in March 2009, while the EU began its migration in October.

It has long been the goal to announce the following years Warpstock location at the final session. This year we have tentatively succeeded. The announcement was made at the final session that the board has tentatively accepted the bid for the University of Waterloo, Waterloo Ontario Canada. The University of Waterloo, near Kitchener, has long had an OS/2 presence. At this time we will still welcome bids for consideration at other locations, though we will only consider bids that include full cost analysis (cost of meeting rooms etc.) and not an intent to bid. The Warpstock Board will make a final vote on September 15. I apologize for getting this out so late but have been swamped catching up at work after taking the time off for Warpstock.

Warpstock Corporation is a Virginia corporation. The Warpstock annual conference is a gathering of OS/2 users, developers, and vendors from around the world for the purpose of education and advocacy. More information is available at the Warpstock web site: http://www.warpstock.org

Warpstock Europe 2010

The warpevents.eu Steering Group has accepted the bid by the German user association Team OS/2 Region Trier e.V. for holding Warpstock Europe 2010 in May in Trier, Germany. Detailed information including the event site and the exact date will be made available as soon as possible.

Trier lies in the very west of Germany, close to the border to Luxembourg. The oldest German city is located at the Mosel river and has a strong Roman heritage. The region is well-known for its vineyards.

Warpstock is an annual conference for the OS/2 and eComStation operating systems and related technology. It is dedicated to information, education, support, and exchange and addresses users, developers, and software vendors. To achieve these goals, the event offers seminars and workshops, exhibition areas, and room for personal exchange.

0. ACPI-sub-system

a) ACPI driver. Current version: ACPI 3.14 (BETAZONE)

The development of ACPI sub-system goes by plan defined in 2006-2008. The professional developers are participating in the project now.

b) PowerNow driver for AMD processors: the development should continue in new season. Test version is not ready for public testing.

b) eSchemes, new builds - eSchemes was refreshed several times, Current version: 1.51 (new version 1.52 doesn't work), all bugs are known, trying to fix one by one. All depends on the developer. The latest version requires the latest eCo Software runtime.

c) SunnyIcons - you need large transparent icons if using modern monitors (15" or larger).

Whatsnew: Small fixes to improve reliability of SunnyIcons. Support of SMP computers, more cute icons!

4. Video drivers

a) Send us the IDs of modern adapters tested with Panorama VESA (Official name of adapter, VendorID:ProductID)

b) If you have troubles with Panorama VESA + Widescreen activator (example: picture is scaled and text strings are unreadable; flash of lines, flashing, etc), then contact us.

c) Widescreen activator: The development continues but we should remind: Widescreen activator, v0.80, Robert Lalla updated the driver several monthes ago, new version includes custom resolution for ATI/AMD Atom-Bios, with user specified values in config.sys.

• Intel graphics: Experimental support for 1366*768 resolution (untested, so far no feedback received from tester)
• ATI/AMD graphics: support for new style of ATOM bios (tested by Gabriele Gamba)

5. eComStation 2.0 Essentials
