NorthLAN Solutions, St. Paul, MN, Serenity Systems, Lewisville, TX, and InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH, Weinstadt, Germany, reached agreement to make Open Office support available to OS/2 users. The development will be done by InnoTek, which has demonstrated its expertise in this area with various projects including updated Adobe Acrobat and updated Java support for OS/2 users. The product plan includes a session to be given by InnoTek at Warpstock. During this session, plans for the beta and general availability will be discussed.
NorthLAN Solutions is a technical fee services organization which has been providing OS/2 and Warp Server support to enterprise accounts since the late 1980s. Beyond the OS/2 oriented skills, NorthLAN is certified on IBM hardware, including the IBM eServer xSeries product line, and software products including firewalls, Linux, and strategic IBM products, such as WebSphere.
According to Bob St.John, of Serenity Systems, "This represents the growing relationship between NorthLAN and Serenity. NorthLAN has been a Premium Channel Partner for years, but now we are moving beyond offering products through NorthLAN. NorthLAN will participate in developing and maintaining products. We are working to develop service and support offerings with NorthLAN to meet the needs of users, commercial accounts, fee service providers, and enterprise accounts; taking advantage of NorthLAN`s experience for over a decade in these environments."
When available, the Open Office for OS/2 package will be available to OS/2 and eComStation users through the Serenity Systems reseller channel. The product will also be offered in special packages with products and services, including offerings by NorthLAN Solutions.

Users discussed the problem of native OpenOffice and cost of its implementation.
"Jonas Buys has contacted Ukranian programmers and it seems they would prepared ton compose A native OO for 500 x 100 USD". Is it a speculation or real project? - let's wait for additional news.

New version of NTFS.IFS driver
There is a fixed version of NTFS.IFS driver for eComStation 1.1 users. Thanks to active testers and productive reports from customers now we have highly accelerated version with support of various versions of NTFS.
This driver was created to simplify migration to eComStation and give additional power to warped users in heterogeneous world.
Status of current version:
- NLS filename space support
- EA support
- any cluster size support
- any NTFS version support (not tested with Windows2003)
- support of large files ( >4gb)
- partial support of compression
Current performance: simple test, speed of copy operations:
in eCS -- Copy a 500MB file from NTFS to HPFS, 1.400K/sec
in W2K -- Copy a 500MB file from NTFS to FAT32, 3.000K/sec
Please test this new release and report your findings through the bugtracker.
New version of IBM Streaming LPR Port Driver
Streaming Line PRinter (SLPR) is a streaming port driver (SLPR.PDR) used to connect your computer to a printer or print server via a TCP/IP connection. The driver uses Line Printer Daemon (LPD) protocol as specified in RFC 1179. This protocol is an almost universal way to send print data to printers and servers. It is meant to be used as a alternative to the \PIPE\LPD0 (henceforth LPD0) port driver which is shipped with OS/2.
Features:
- Faster Throughput: Data can be sent to the printer almost as soon as it is generated as compared to the LPD0 driver which needs to wait until all the printer job is generated before it is sent.
- Simpler Setup: The LPD0 driver requires a separate program (LPD.EXE) be up and running before it will work. Since the LPD program is communicating with the printer directly it has the status - not the spooler.
- Better Error Handling: With LPD0 any problems are reported via LPD program and not the spooler. With SLPR there is a direct interaction with the spooler so error recovery is more intelligent.
- User Specified Time-outs: With LPD the default is to wait indefinitely so out of paper or printer jams are not noticed for a long time. With SLPR any waits longer than the user specified time-out generates an easy to see pop-up notification.
- More Ports: SLPR can have up to 64.
