Virtual Machine Options for ECS as Host:

VirtualBox (Open Source Edition)

Seems like the best alternative at the moment.

The RDP / USB Passthru features of the commercial version, available for free under the PUEL license (Windows / Linux / Solaris) are not available in the open source version. Pity. And I doubt that anything in this universe will induce Sun to release an ECS Version of the commercial code...

Virtual PC

Originally Connectix, bought over by Microsoft in ca. Summer 2003. Can run XP, but VERY slow. A rough idea is about 33% of the original host system can be used by Virtual PC. Won't install on newer CPUs - no support for Dual CPU, let alone MulitCore. AFAIK, Virtual PC was NEVER free on Innoteks site - there was a link to Connectix, where the actual sale was done...

  • Version: Virtual PC 2004
  • Last Version for ECS: 5.1

Reviews: 2004

Not supported any more, nor available commercially.

Serenity Virtual Station (AKA SVISTA/2)
  • Latest version: SVISTA/2 2004

Not supported any more, nor available commercially.

VMWare

No host for eComStation

QEMU / Bochs

Not good enough to even be mentionned in prime time!

Virtual Machine Options for ECS as Guest:

Microsoft Virtual PC (modern)
  • Guest eComStation 1.2 works
VMWare
  • old VMWare: guest eComStation is not supported
  • eCS 2.0 (RC5) is running fine inside VMware Fusion 2.0 (latest beta), with guestOS="os2experimental" and monitor_control.vt32="TRUE".
  • Review: VMware Fusion for Mac
VMWare ESXi installable v4
SVISTA (Paralles before 2005)
  • Guest eComStation 1.2 is supported
Parallels virtual machine
  • guest eComStation 1.2 works inside VM
  • Chuck: Since Parallels appears to present the virtual disk as an ordinary IDE drive, I have been using the latest IBM1S506.ADD, IBMATAPI.FLT, and IBMIDECD.FLT. I will probably re-think this when I try to add RSJ support.
VirtualBox
  • vbox requires vtx to install os2 guest regardless of host platform.
    • This Core 2 Duo don't support Intel VT: P7350, P7450, T5200, T5250, T5270, T5300, T5450, T5470, T6400 and T6570
    • AMD without AMD-V support: Sempron
